Admission Requirements

Here are some dental schools and requirements to get you started!

CANADIAN SCHOOLS

University of Toronto 

GPA:

  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 for all university work 

    • not including courses taken during the proposed year of entry

    • Summer, online, and graduate courses are included in GPA 

    • Pass/fail and credit/no credit courses not included in GPA

  • Worst academic year not included in GPA calculation if the applicant completes 4+ years of University education by May 31st of the proposed year of entry

  • Applicants invited for interviews in past years had a minimum average of 3.85

 

DAT:

  • American DAT accepted

  • Only looking at Academic Average and Perceptual Ability Test scores

  • Manual Dexterity section not required

  • Best DAT score in the past 2 years is considered

 

Prerequisites:

  • Must complete 3 years of university education- no full course load requirements

  • 2 semesters of general biochemistry

  • 2 semesters of general mammalian physiology

  • 4 additional semesters of life science courses (Example: anatomy, biochemistry, biology, botany, genetics, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology/genetics, neuroscience, nutritional sciences, pharmacology, toxicology, physiology, zoology)

  • 2 semesters of Humanities or social sciences

  • CASPer test mandatory- must be retaken each year of application submission

Deadlines:

  • Applications deadline is November 1st each year - no rolling admissions.

 

Number of Applicants Accepted:

  • 180 applicants invited for an interview

  • 96 applicants accepted into the program- from all provinces and territories

  • 500+ applicants applying each year

 

Supplementary Applications:

  • Interviews granted based on academic achievement, DAT scores, CASPer test scores, and essays (supplementary essay questions vary each application cycle).

 

Fees:

  • Approximately $45,000.00 per year for domestic students, $90,000.00 per year for international students - including academic, non-academic and dental instrumental fees

UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA

GPA:

  • Minimum core course averages for out of province applicants is 3.80 

    • “Pass/Fail” courses and those taken from September to April are not included in the calculation of your AGPA (Adjusted Grade Point Average)

  • AGPA can be calculated using the following formula: 

    • (2 x the average on the CORE courses) + (0 x the average on lowest year) + (3 x the average on best year) + (1 x the average on each remaining full academic year of studies) DIVIDED BY SIX (or seven or eight etc., as appropriate)

DAT:

  • Applicants with a DAT score below that of a 14 in any section will not be considered for an interview

  • Manual Dexterity section must be greater than 12 to be considered for an interview

  • Best DAT score in the past 3 years is considered

  • Over the past three years, competitive DAT averages for those applying from out of province were 22.

Prerequisites:

  • Must complete 2 years (4 semesters worth) of courses totalling up to 60 credit hours

  • 2 semesters of introductory chemistry

  • 2 semesters of general biochemistry

  • 2 semesters of organic chemistry

  • 2 semesters of physics

  • 2 semesters of general biology

  • One course of english

  • One course in the humanities/social sciences

Deadlines:

  • The Application deadline is January 15th each year.

Number of Applicants Accepted:

  • Class size of 29

    • 25 of which must be from Manitoba

Supplementary Applications:

  • Interviews granted based on academic achievement, DAT scores, and essays (supplementary essay questions vary each application cycle).

Fees:

  • Application fee: $100.00

  • Estimated $23,800 per year for tuition of a Canadian resident

Dalhousie University 

GPA:​

  • Completion of 60 credit hours of required pre-dentistry courses (or equivalents) 

  • Generally, your 10 most recent full-year university classes (or equivalent) and the average in the three higher sciences are the most important. Grades in these two areas should be in the B+ to A- range before you are interviewed.

DAT: 

  • A minimum Academic Average score of 15 and

  • A minimum Perceptual Ability score of 15 and

  • A minimum Reading Comprehension score of 15

  • A minimum MDT score of 15

  • *Accepts American DAT*

Prerequisites:

  • 2 Biology courses w/ laboratory

  • 2 Chemistry courses w/ laboratory 

  • 2 Physics courses w/ laboratory

  • 2 Organic Chemistry courses w/ laboratory

  • 2 Vertebrate Physiology courses

  • 2 Writing courses

  • 1 Biochemistry course

  • 1 Microbiology course 

  • 4 Social sciences/ humanities 

Deadlines:

  • December 1st of each year

  • February 1st of each year to submit supporting documents 

Number of applicants accepted:

  • 40 total applicants, preference of Atlantic provinces

Supplementary Applications:

  • Fill a supplementary application form

  • 3 references after you are invited to the interview

McGill University

GPA:

  • GPA of above a 3.2 is required 

  • 120-credit bachelor's degree (4 years) on a full-time basis.

 

DAT: 

  • The Perceptual Ability Test is the only section of the DAT that is considered; a minimum score of 15

  • The American DAT is accepted as of Fall 2021 entry

**UPDATED: McGill does NOT require the DAT for Fall 2021 entry ONLY**


Prerequisites (3 credits is equivalent to 1 course/semester):

  • a minimum 6 credits of introductory BIOLOGY coursework with labs

  • a minimum 6 credits of GENERAL (or physical) CHEMISTRY coursework with labs

  • a minimum 3 credits of ORGANIC CHEMISTRY coursework with labs

  • a minimum 6 credits of introductory PHYSICS coursework with labs  (3 credits in Calculus could also count towards half of the required credits in Physics)

Deadlines:

  • November 1st of each year

Number of applicants accepted:

  • 30 total applicants, 22 Quebec residents, and 8 out of province applicants.

  • **the number of applications for that cycle was unusually low and should not be used as a point of reference for next year's cycle.

Supplementary Applications:

  • Interviews are granted based on Academic Average, CV, DAT scores, CASPer scores, and Academic History Workbook.

  • CASPer: Test in English (Canadian Professional Health Sciences) Deadline: October 22nd, 2020

UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN

GPA:

  • A cumulative weighted average of 75% over the TWO best academic years of study.

  • Completion of 39 credit units of required pre-dentistry courses (or equivalents) with a minimum overall average of 70%

DAT: 

  • A minimum Academic Average score of 15 and

  • A minimum Perceptual Ability score of 14 and

  • A minimum Reading Comprehension score of 14

Prerequisites:

  • 2 Biology courses

  • 2 Chemistry courses

  • 2 Physics courses

  • 2 Biochemistry courses

  • 2 Physiology courses

  • 1 Nutrition course

  • 1 Microbiology course 

  • Social sciences/ humanities (six credits)

Deadlines:

  • December 1st of each year

Number of applicants accepted:

  • 280 total applicants, 51 Saskatchewan applicants, and 229 out of province applicants. 

Supplementary Applications:

  • Interviews are granted based on the academic average of the applicant’s TWO best years and the best overall DAT score.

UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA

GPA: 

  • In order to be competitive, applicants should strive for a minimum GPA of 3.5 in their university studies. Students with a GPA of less than 3.0 will not be considered for admission.

  • Completion of 60 transferable postsecondary work (10 full year course equivalents or 20 half year course equivalents), of which 30 (5 full year course equivalents or 10 half year course equivalents) must be taken during one Fall/Winter (a Fall/Winter academic year is September to April inclusive).

DAT:

  • A minimum Academic Average score of 15 and

  • A minimum Perceptual Ability score of 15 and

  • A minimum Reading Comprehension score of 15

  • A minimum MDT score of 15

  • **Does NOT accept American DAT**

 

Prerequisites: 

  • 2 General chemistry courses 

  • 2 Organic chemistry courses

  • 2 Biology courses

  • 2 Physics courses

  • 2 English courses

  • 1 Statistics course

  • 1 Biochemistry course

  • November 1st of each year

 

Number of applicants accepted:

  • 31 total applicants, of the 31 seats 85% are reserved for Alberta residents, 5% for international students, and 10% for other Canadians

  • Completed University of Alberta online undergraduate application for admission

University of British Columbia

GPA:

  • Achieve a minimum overall Grade Point Average of 70% or 2.8 on a 4.0 grading scale for ALL college/university work (including failed courses)

  • Students who complete three years of full-time courses in any degree program at a recognized university and who have completed the required courses are eligible to apply.

 

DAT:

  • Canadian and American DAT scores will be accepted no later than the November 7, 2020 test date.

  • DAT scores from November 1, 2017 to November 7, 2020 inclusive, are acceptable

  • For students who wrote the DAT exam more than once, the best overall test score will be used

  • All test components are assessed; Manual Dexterity component is not required

 

Prerequisites:

  • Applicants for admission to the class of 2025 must have completed all required courses and course credits by August 31, 2020

    • English – Minimum 6 credits

    • Chemistry – Minimum 6 credits

    • Biology – Minimum 6 credits

    • Organic Chemistry – Minimum 6 credits

    • Biochemistry – Minimum 6 credits

  • Pass/Fail grades will not be accepted

  • Dental shadowing is not required; however, it is highly recommended to have at least 30 hours of dental shadowing experience at the time of application.

 

Deadlines:

  • The deadline for fully documented applications is November 1, 2020

 

Number of applicants accepted:

  • 90% of available domestic seats will be offered to BC applicants.

  • UBC receives approximately 400-450 applications each year

  • In the last few years, there were 60 seats in the DMD class

 

Supplementary applications:

  • Submit a personal statement detailing why you wish to pursue a career as a dentist.

  • Submit two letters of reference:

    • 1. science professor in an upper level science course (300/3000 level or higher)

    • 2. healthcare professional who knows the candidate on a professional basis (non-relative, no family-friend)

 

CASPer:

  • Not required for UBC

GPA:

  • A cumulative weighted average of 80% over the TWO best academic years of study, competitive 89%.

  • At least five full or equivalent courses (30 credit hours) taken between September and April. This constitutes a full course load. The distribution of the 30 credit hours between the September to April year (i.e. between the semesters in one academic year) is not relevant. Summer courses are not eligible for academic average consideration.

DAT:

  • Must be written within the past two years prior to the application deadline:​

  • Only the most recent DAT, written within the eligible time period, will be used.

  • Only DAT incorporating the Reading Comprehension section fulfills Schulich Dentistry admission requirements.

  • All sections of the DAT may be considered in the selection process. We do not require the Manual Dexterity section.

  • Average Reading Comprehension Score: 22

  • Average Perceptual Ability Score: 19

  • Average Academic Average Score: 21

Prerequisites:

  • 0.5 Organic Chemistry

  • 0.5 Biochemistry

  • 1.0 Human or Mammalian Physiology courses

 

Application Deadline:

December 1st of each year

Number of applicants accepted: 56

Supplementary Applications:

  • Reference letter, shadowing and other non-academic requirements: No reference letter, Autobiographical Sketch, and personal statement needed along with an interview.
